ISO45001 H&S Standard. Its happening.

After what seems like an age, the recent release of the second draft of ISO 45001 OHS Management System Standard has entered the second phase of consultation. This is referred to as ‘DIS2’ (Draft International Standard).

The working standard group, is due to meet in September to review the consultation feedback. At this point the group will evaluate comments to see if any further changes are required.

Once the feedback has been reviewed, the group comprising of 59 different international representatives vote to determine the acceptance of the draft text.

Significant consultation feedback was submitted following the first draft and the expectation is that the second draft is on course for approval and release before the end of 2017.

At last!

For those of you that are involved in the world of ISO Standards, unlike recent changes to ISO9001 QMS and ISO14001 EMS there will not be a ‘transition phase’ from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001. OHSAS 18001 will remain as a standard as it has been adopted within national legislation in countries such as Denmark and Uganda.

Rather than ‘transition’, organisations who are certified to OHSAS 18001 may “migrate” across to the new standard. So, there will be a choice.

And therefore, organisations who are not currently certificated to OHSAS 18001 may want to wait until the new ISO 45001 is released.

However, we support the view of Certification Bodies that we work with, that it is important to act now. There is no time to waste in protecting your employees and business reputation by adopting a formal occupational health and safety management system.
