The Occupational Health and Safety Management Standard, ISO 45001 has been published and is being adopted as a popular addition to the family of ISO standards. Occupational Health and Safety has long been a difficult subject for many member nations of the ISO movement, but the 45001 standard has broken down the barriers and is providing a practical framework for organisations to use as they manage this topic.
For those organisations that are currently certified to OHSAS 18001, much of the groundwork has been done to implement the new Standard, although some work may be required to ensure that the format of the infomration meets the framework of Annex SL. Unlike recent changes to ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) there will not be a ‘transition phase’ from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001. In fact, the OHSAS 18001 standard will remain in place as a standard, as it has been adopted within national legislation in some countries, such as Denmark and Uganda.
