Your ISO training starts here

Spedan Ltd provide a broad range of ISO training courses to ensure that our clients and their workers have the skills they need to operate effective and efficient ISO management systems.

ISO Standards Training

All ISO management systems including Quality are most effective when all workers understand and apply their skill within the organisation.

Competent workers who have gained knowledge in process application and the management system framework, are more likely to successfully develop continuous improvement within the business.

Hence, it is important that ISO system managers (e.g. Quality, SHEQ or Safety managers) have a good strategic view of the organisation so that gaps in the levels of competence can be filled effectively and efficiently. The decision to adopt a management system and apply the requirements of ISO Management Standards is a strategic one. Organisations should realise that they are making decisions that will have long lasting beneficial impact.

The benefits gained from the ISO management systems should far outweigh the costs associated with its development. Training and competence is one such area where this is realised, as strategic planning will ensure the management team are aware of developments to technologies and potential future skills gaps and have actions to meet them.

What ISO Management Standards need for Competence and Training

To achieve certification and demonstrate compliance to the International Standards, organisations will need to ensure the follow the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ process.

PLAN

Planning activities will include the determination of skills requirements. System managers need to have central processes that determine the levels of competence that people need, in order that they can perform their duties. These processes will ensure that strategic decisions can be made regarding the allocation of ISO training activity for people that may require it. Once the required training has been identified, system managers will need to provide the training or skills development to the individuals. To ensure that the training is effective, an evaluation of the training should be carried out

DO

Practical application (the ‘Do’ phase of PDCA) of the training will occur throughout an individual’s career with an organisation. From the outset, an individual will be getting training provided from

In addition to ISO training and skills development that help an individual to perform the processes and activities needed to operate the company, the organisation will need to provide awareness training on the management systems, and the ISO management standards that the organisation wants to meet. Specifically, this will include details of the management system policy and objectives the organisation has set, but also setting out the importance of the individuals contribution to the ISO management system and implications if they do not meet the requirements.

CHECK

‘Checking’ that training has occurred may take place through audits of required training; auditors can check that processes have been followed as they were planned. Where checks reveal discrepancies with the plan, actions can then be taken to rectify or improve the situation.

ACT

The final step of the PDCA phase (i.e. ‘Act’) can be applied at both a strategic and operational level. Where discrepancies or improvements are found against operational processes, plan can be put in place to improve or correct the situation and local managers can implement them. At a more strategic level, the management team will want to review the data that is generated throughout the organisation in order to make improvement decisions based on facts.

How to meet the ISO 9001 Competence and Training requirements

ISO training requirements are defined in Clause 7.2 Competency and Clause 7.3 Awareness. A key principle of ISO management systems is the engagement of people; part of that engagement is ensuring that people who work for the organisation are competent in the processes they operate, and have good levels of awareness of the company’s management system.

ISO Standard requirements reflect generally accepted actions and evidence that organisations will use; for example,

  • A training matrix
  • Skills analysis
  • Training Records
  • Effective Induction

A training matrix can be very useful as a simple means of recording what ISO training and competency levels have been achieved by individuals. The matrix can be used to plan future training needs and succession planning over time.

A skills analysis, which provides a deeper and more detailed look at the roles, responsibilities, processes and activities of the organisation will provide a useful platform on which to plan training and competency development for larger organisations.

Training records provide great evidence that ISO training and competencies have been assessed. Training records are usually signed by the individual, so also provide a practical level of protection for the organisation in case of incident.

Effective inductions are the perfect opportunity to introduce new members of staff to the quality or other ISO management systems and their policies. Good records of induction provision are not only opportunities to raise awareness of the ISO management system, but also to other processes and activities that the organisation operates.

At audit, the personnel who manage the ISO Management system will need to provide evidence of ISO 9001 awareness training, lead auditor capabilities within the organisation, and management awareness and understanding.
